Shri Govind Guru University was established in 2015 by the Government of Gujarat to cater to the educational needs of students, particularly from the tribal-dominated districts of Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar, Chhota Udepur, and Vadodara (rural). Named after the great tribal freedom fighter and social reformer Govind Guru, the university upholds his legacy by promoting knowledge, empowerment, and social inclusion.

Since its inception, the Department of Sociology has been actively engaged in teaching, research, and fieldwork to understand and improve the conditions of tribal and rural communities. It offers postgraduate program that combine theoretical perspectives with practical applications, equipping students with critical thinking and analytical skills.

The department conducts research on key sociological issues such as tribal rights, social justice, gender equality, migration, livelihood patterns, and sustainable development. Through collaborations with academic institutions, research organizations, and governmental bodies, it strives to contribute to policy-making and grassroots-level social change.
